Reddit Recommendations
I'm a big fan of Reddit and the r/horror subreddit in particular. That's where I go when I'm looking for real recommendations for good short stories, novellas, etc. Other fans of horror are always going to be a better source for what's good than critics who may or may not love the genre.
Cody Goodfellow’s “At The Riding School”
Well, I can certainly say I’ve never read anything quite like “At the Riding School” by Cody Goodfellow.
I’m not sure I’d say I enjoyed it—but it definitely left an impression.
Laird Barron’s “In a Cavern, In a Canyon”
I have a complicated relationship with Mr. Barron's writing. Some of his stories are outstanding while others lean too far into tropes around machismo in the face of incomprehensible cosmic horror. That works for some stories but he has a large number of those in his oeuvre. “In a Cavern, in a Canyon” is one of his stories that doesn't follow those tropes at all.
